Interfaith Ghana trains young people in waste management

Accra, Dec. 11, GNA – Interfaith Ghana, a youth and gender focused non-governmental organisation, has trained more than 40 young people fro= m Darkuman Zongo, Accra, in waste management, disposal and general sanitati= on practices.

The training programme, which was provided by operation officers of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a private waste management company was part of activities outlined for a month- long Interfaith Ghana Month 2010, under the sponsorship of the Commonwealth Foundation.

The day’s training programme, the first of its kind in the community=

was attended by young participants in the Zongo community from different backgrounds including students, youth development workers, youth in vario= us skilled vocations and hairdressers from the National Youth Employment Programme.

Mr Ricky Anokye Frimpong, Operations Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limit= ed, who led the highly interactive training programme, urged the participants= to transfer the skills and information given to them to their parents and guardians, especially to their mothers who were mainly responsible for th= e upkeep of the home and making of decisions about the management, treatmen= t and disposal of waste generated regularly at home.

The female participants expressed difficulties in handling of liquid=

and semi-solid waste materials at home and called on Zoomlion as well as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to provide the community with special waste disposal cans and containers that could separate liquid from solid waste. Mr Gideon Commey, Co-director of Interfaith Ghana, said the Commonwealth Foundation had a keen interest in addressing youth and gende= r concerns. He said his outfit would facilitate a number of discourse to address=

the needs of the community.
