Three newly elected MP’s for the Conservative Party in the UK, are of Ghanaian origin.
They are 33-year-old former businessman Sam Gyimah(pictured) who secured over 31,000 votes to win the East Surrey seat, while 34-year-old Kwasi Kwarteng an Eton College and Cambridge University graduate and former journalist, polled over 22,000 votes to win the Spelthorne seat and Adam Afriyie.
Speaking after he was announced as the new MP, Mr Gyimah said: “It’s been an incredible campaign, saying he has worked very hard.”
Meanwhile Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng’s victory speech was marred by shouts of ‘scumbag’ from Lib Dem campaigners when he paid tribute to former MP David Wilshire.
The newly elected Conservative MP was met with heckles after his victory was announced at Spelthorne Leisure Centre, in Knowle Green, in the early hours of Friday morning.
Mr Kwarteng went on to accuse the Lib Dem’s of running a scurrilous campaign but kept a calm demeanour.
Mr. Kwarteng, said: “I wasn’t going to mention the Liberal Democrats but the sort of campaign they were running was scurrilous.”
Voters made Spelthorne history by voting Mr Kwarteng in as the first black MP in the borough.
Mr Kwarteng takes over from David Wilshire who had held the Conservative seat in the borough for 22 years before stepping down last year.
