THE SPANISH government, through its Embassy in Accra has donated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment worth 58,000 Euros to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at a ceremony in Accra last week Wednesday.
They include 26 sets of HP computers with a main server, 10 HP printers and a box each containing Digital mobile microscope and Microsoft Windows server licenses.
The acting Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Rebecca Guinea Stal told newsmen that the presentation was a practical demonstration of unflinching support to the service, and to be abreast of current happenings on the borders.
She indicated that the cooperation with Ghana has become very crucial, assuring that the relationship between both countries would be further deepened.
On her part, the Director of GIS, Ms. Elizabeth Adjei expressed appreciation to the Spanish government and pledged that the computers would be put to good use. She admitted that the items would be of utmost significance in the collection and storing of data, coupled with other administrative works.
The GIS boss said though her outfit was moving very fast at restructuring border managements, it is still saddled with some challenges to fully discharge its duties, mentioning inadequate resources.
Some more logistics, she noted, would be needed to detect the activities of drug and child traffickers, as well as disrupting identity fraud.
The Head of Spain’s Migration Desk, Vincente G. Sanjuan mentioned that the duty of the authorities was to fight against illegal migration in order to reduce or eliminate the action of organized crimes on the borders.
He also added that national authorities should endeavour to inform people about the dangers involved in illegal migration.
