US Army undertakes free health screening exercise in Tema

Tema, March 21, GNA – The US Army in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, at the weekend embarked on a two-week medical outreach programme at Manheam Health Centre in Tema New Town. The free medical screening and treatment was aimed at addressing the health needs of civilians in the Metropolis. The team of specialists involved in the programme include dental and eye specialists, gynaecologists and physicians. About 3,500 people, including children took advantage of the first day of the exercise.

Most of them checked their blood pressure levels, weight, and sickling status and were given free counselling. Lieutenant Commander Steven Kummeth, Lead Planner of the project, said the exercise was also aimed at providing medical training to health practitioners and forged partnership with the people of Ghana through health delivery.

Lt.Cdr. Dr William Smith, said the main diseases that were reported, included malaria, fever, boils, fungi and respiratory infections. Dr. Smith advised patients to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and cautioned them to avoid eating fatty foods. Dr Smith said he was impressed about the turn-out, advised the people to keep their surroundings clean to avoid the breeding of mosquitoes in order to prevent malaria. 21 March 10
