Portuphy again blames haphazard development for floods

Accra, July 8, GNA – Mr Kofi Portuphy, Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), on Wednesday noted that most floods in Accra were caused by recalcitrant individuals and developers who defied building regulations and other codes to build in waterways to block the free flow of water. Speaking when officials of Duraplast Ghana Limited, manufactures of PVC and HDPE pipes and fittings, presented 80 mattresses to be given to flood victims, he said most victims of Accra floods were not the cause of the disaster.

“It is very sad and pathetic to see fellow human beings dying and many more being displaced and properties being lost as a result of someone ignoring building regulations,” he said.

Mr Portuphy also appealed to the public to get involved in the efforts to reduce the perennial floods in the country. Mr Opoku Mensah Otuo, System/Audit Manager of Duraplast Ghana Limited, said the company was touched by the plight of victims especially during the recent floods in Accra metropolis.
