Chief wants drunken teachers punished

Goaso (B/A) March 30, GNA – Nana Kwasi Baafour Bosomprah, Omanhene of Goaso Traditional Area, has called for punitive measures to check alcoholism among teachers. He said the practice among some teachers hampered academic development of the youth and urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take the matter up seriously. The Omanhene made the call at a send-off party in honour of the out-going Asunafo North Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Desouza at Goaso. He suggested that the GES could use alcohol detector machines, (breathalyzer) as used by the Police on drivers, to check suspected drunken teachers on duty. “Teachers have a responsible role to play in the education and the training of the youth because the successful implementation of the educational reforms needs their maximum support as a major stakeholder,” Nana Baafour stressed.

Mrs. Akua Debrah, Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, called for effective collaboration between teachers and other stakeholders for the effective promotion of education. “The GES is working out modalities for improvement in the conditions of service of teachers,” she announced and advised teachers to reciprocate the gesture with hard work. Mrs. Desouza, for her part, expressed profound gratitude for the support from teachers in the area during her tenure of office.
