A former police officer on Wednesday called on the public to give the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Ernest Owusu-Poku, maximum co-operation in his effort to solve the mystery killing of women and the spate of armed robberies.
Mr Isaac Kofi Nketsia, now National Treasurer of the Ghana Timber Association, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Takoradi that the police would continue to rely on information from the public to help them in their investigations.
He said the IGP can be effective only when members of the public would be forthcoming with vital information and refrain from covering up criminals and evildoers.
“I know the IGP to be a man of action, he is dedicated, he is a disciplinarian, and he is hardworking and honest. I am confident that he will live up to expectation if he gets the necessary co-operation and support”.
Mr. Nketsia suggested to the IGP to revamp the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by providing the personnel with sufficient facilities and incentives to enable them give of their best in crime detection.
He advised the police to eschew all negative tendencies that bring the image of the service into disrepute and work hard to regain public confidence.
“Hard working policemen and women should be rewarded and the bad nuts flushed out”, he added.
Mr. Nketsia also expressed concern about proliferation of arms and appealed to the IGP to initiate immediate action to retrieve all firearms that have found their way into wrong hands.
Another area of great concern, he pointed out, is the unprofessional use of arms by some policemen and said he hoped the IGP would institute a retraining programme for personnel in riot control and effective use of arms.
