Accra records 3,0001 accidents

Statistics indicate that between the months of January and June this year the Greater Accra Region recorded a total of 3,001 accidents.

Out of this 153 deaths were recorded with 360 injuries. A statement by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) said statistics for 1999 shows that 13,613 accident cases were reported, with 1,288 dead and 8,791 sustaining injuries.

The GPRTU asked motorists to make the conscious effort to be disciplined on the roads to avoid any loss of life particularly as the Christmas and New Year celebrations draw near. It cautioned motorists to remember that accidents are not God sent, or pre-destined, noting that, “many accidents can be avoided, especially when motorists make the conscious effort.”

The statement said the Union hopes to inject more discipline into the performance of its members to help improve their services and appealed to drivers and road users to exercise the greatest restraint during the coming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
