Police resolves to maintain peace at Bekwai

Bekwai (Ash), Sept. 20, GNA – The Bekwai Police has admonished leaders of political parties to impress upon their members to strive to be law- abiding in their political activities and campaigns for the maintenance of peace in the area before, during and after the December elections.

Police Superintendent Felix Cosmos, the Bekwai Municipal Police Commander, said following recent skirmishes, clashes and conflicts in the area among some political parties and politicians, his outfit was on high alert and had resolved to enforce the laws. He said those who were bent on causing trouble with the intent of throwing Bekwai into a state of turmoil would be dealt with according to the law.

He was speaking at a political education durbar of chiefs and people of Bekwai, organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday.

The durbar was aimed at sensitizing the public on their civil rights and responsibilities, to ensure that they make informed decisions in their political activities to enhance peaceful elections. Superintendent Cosmos stressed the need for the public to partner the police if they were to live up to expectation in maintaining law and order.

He said the time has come for the public to consider that, enhancing peace in the country was a shared responsibility and not the sole prerogative of the police.

The Municipal Police Commander lauded the NCCE for the education and expressed the hope that the public would take the programme serious for a peaceful campaigns and elections

Nana Opoku Ababio, Adontehene of the Bekwai Traditional Area, urged the NCCE to intensify their educational programmes, to help the public to be conscious of their civic rights and responsibilities.
