Government urged to establish recognized and functional Cashew Board

Banda Ahenkro (B/A), Aug. 11, GNA – The government has been urged to support the cashew industry that has replaced cocoa in the transitional zone of the country through the establishment of a cashew board. Mr. Christopher Dapaah, Coordinating Director of Resource Link Foundation, an NGO, said support could also be in the form of granting loans and provision of scholarships to children of farmers. He was speaking at the closing session of a four-day BUSAC Fund support Advocacy Training Workshop for Bandaman Citizens Cashew Farmers’ Association at Banda Ahenkro.

Mr. Dapaah said middlemen in the cashew industry deprived the farmers of enjoying the benefits of their labour. Mr. James Anane, Advisor to the Nafaanra Literacy Project at Banda Ahenkro, called on the farmers and citizens of the area to control bushfires.

He thanked BUSAC and other stakeholders for their support for the farmers and wished that such programme would be regular so that more farmers would be empowered. 11 Aug 08
