3,500 biometric registration kits dispatched to districts

The Electoral Commission has dispatched 3,500 biometric voters’ registration kits and back-ups throughout the country in readiness for its nationwide limited voters’ registration exercise scheduled for April 28.

The exercise, which would be in two phases, seeks to register Ghanaians who have turned 18 years as well as other eligible individuals not registered as voters in the country.

The first phase begins on the April 28 to May 2 while the second phase will come off from May 4 to May 8, 2016, the Commission has said.

Officials of the Commission told TV3 Monday that two electoral areas would share one biometric registration kit in the exercise which will be manned by 21,000 EC officials

According to the Commission, it is ready for the exercise noting that all materials have been dispatched to the regions for subsequent distribution to the districts.

Officials of the EC told TV3 that it has finished two separate training programmes for the media and other EC officials with grassroot training currently ongoing.

It however admitted public education, particularly television and radio advertisement on the exercise have delayed but hopes to start airing this week. It added technicians have been sent to the districts to work on the public address system to help educate the populace before the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Commission says persons who have lost their voters’ identity cards and those who wish to transfer their votes from one area to the other need not register again during the limited registration.
