Ghanaian Afro-dancehall icon Stonebwoy has thrown his support behind the Black Queens as they gear up for their crucial quarter-final showdown against Algeria at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Queens secured second place in Group C after a turbulent group-stage campaign, which saw them lose 2-0 to reigning champions South Africa, draw 1-1 with Mali, and bounce back in style with a 4-1 victory over Tanzania. The win earned them a spot in the last eight, marking their first quarter-final appearance since 2016.
Speaking on Asempa FM, the celebrated musician expressed his admiration for women’s football and singled out one player in particular.
“I enjoy women’s football more than men’s football and have been following them, especially the new player Chantelle Boye. I’ve been doing videos to encourage them,” Stonebwoy said.
He added that he, like many Ghanaians, is fully behind the team as they prepare to face Algeria on Saturday, July 19.
“Myself, and I believe all Ghanaians, are rallying behind them, so they should make us proud by beating Algeria,” he said warmly. “I hope to meet them when they return to Ghana after the tournament.”
The Queens are set to hold their final training session on Friday ahead of the highly anticipated knockout tie. A win would see them advance to the semi-finals, something Ghanaian fans have long awaited.
With national support swelling and messages like Stonebwoy’s boosting morale, the Queens head into the clash with renewed confidence and high expectations.
