Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren says Ghana must be tactically sharp and clinical in front of goal as they face a defensively solid Algerian side in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday, July 19.
Speaking ahead of the match at the Stade de Berkane, Coach Björkegren praised Algeria’s defensive organisation and highlighted the need for precision in Ghana’s attacking play.
“Algeria are a really well-organized team, especially in defense, and they have a good goalkeeper,” he said. “We’ve talked about the need to make it a little more difficult for her.”
The Swedish coach stressed that the Queens must avoid relying on speculative efforts and instead focus on creating high-quality chances.
“We can’t just shoot from 45 meters and hope for the best,” Björkegren said. “We need to create better chances and be clinical when those opportunities come. No need to look for fancy goals.”
Despite the challenge, he remains confident in the squad’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“It’s going to be a difficult game, but I believe in the players. I’m sure they’ll put in a good performance,” he added.
The Black Queens are aiming for their first semi-final appearance at WAFCON since 2016. With growing support back home and renewed energy in camp, Ghana will be looking to outplay Algeria and continue their journey toward continental glory.
