200 SHS promise will be fulfilled – Ablakwa

Deputy Minister in charge of Tertiary Education Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has expressed confidence that the Mahama administration’s promise to build 200 secondary schools by the end of the President’s first term, will be fulfilled.

Mr Ablakwa said more than half of the schools are at various stages of completion.

Speaking ahead of the inauguration of the Kwaobaah-Nyanoa Community Day Senior High School (SHS) in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern region on Thursday February 4, Mr Ablakwa said President Mahama remains committed to his promise.

He told Class News: “Every single promise that President Mahama has made to the Ghanaian people he delivers on that promise.

“I do not want this matter to become what we have said and what others are saying. You are in the media, you be the independent arbiters. You can get on the ground and check if it is not true that so far 123 of these schools are at various stages of completion.

“As I speak to you, the good people of this country have seen that three have been commissioned already at Otuam, Babiamkor and Nkwanta South. President Mahama would be in the Eastern region to commission the fourth one in the Upper West Akim District and we are going to continue with the commissioning. There are quite a number of them ready for commissioning.”

“If you come to consider the fact that there are less than 600 public senior high schools in Ghana for more than 100 years … if you look at the first senior high school established around 1836, from 1836 to now for more than a 100 years we have had less than 600 schools and in just four years we want to establish almost half of that number”.
