Workshop for gas station supervisors ends

A training workshop for petrol and gas filling stations owners and supervisors has ended with a call for them to put in place appropriate mechanisms prevent fire outbreaks and other hazards.

The workshop, organised by SEJ Education, an Obuasi-based occupational safety, health and management consultancy firm in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), was attended by 61 participants.

Among the topics discussed were Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) operational legal requirements for filling stations, operational hazards management at petrol and gas filling stations, safety management systems and emergency reporting procedures.

Mr John Ackah, the Obuasi Municipal NADMO Co-ordinator, said many Ghanaians do not give the required attention to the safety needs and practices of the society.

He said fire outbreaks at filling stations are a fatal experience and urged the owners of the filling stations to take the programme seriously.

Mr Samuel Otchere Amoako, Chief Executive Officer of SEJ Education, said managers of petrol and gas filling stations need to protect their employees from injury and illnesses and ensure the protection of their assets, investments and the environment.

He said to ensure proper safety management systems at their workplaces, managers of such stations, have to lay down appropriate procedures that must be observed by all workers.

Mr Amoako urged the participants to make daily inspection of their materials and equipment to ensure that they are in appropriate conditions.

Mr Joseph Amoako Addai, an EPA Environmental Officer, advised the participants to guard against going contrary to the EPA operational legal requirements.

Ms Afua Kyekye Mensah, Executive Secretary of SEJ Education, advised the participants to take proper care of their stations and ensure that the stipulated safety measures are adhered.
