Work begins on W/R Jubilee durbar grounds

Sekondi, Jan 17, GNA – Construction has began on a four billion-cedi Western Regional Jubilee durbar and parade grounds at West Tanokrom near Takoradi, Mr. Anthony Evans Amoah, the Western Regional Minister, said. He said at a meeting of Ghana @ 50 Regional Planning Committee at Sekondi that the project would be completed at the end of this month. The centre will serve as information centre for activities of Ghana @ 50 and would house artifacts and indigenous craft from the region. Mr. Amoah said as part of the 50th Independence Anniversary celebration, a torch dubbed Freedom Flame would be lit to invite all people to join in the celebration.

He said the torch “Will reawaken and inspire Ghanaians to make freedom meaningful. It will symbolize unity, strength, harmony and goodwill representing the ideas our forefathers fought for. It will inspire us to hasten our freedom and social development”.

The flame would be carried across the country, using hand-to-hand relay of walkers and runners in all regional capitals.

It will arrive at the Polo Ground on March 5 where an enactment of the Declaration of Independence will take place.

Mr. Amoah said the flame is expected to arrive in Bibiani in the Western Region from Kumasi on February 23.

From Bibiani the flame would travel to Wassa Akropong, Tarkwa and Agona Nkwanta before entering Sekondi where a durbar would be held.
