Ghana military delegation tours Zimbabwe’s model waste facility

A high-level delegation from Ghana’s Armed Forces Command and Staff College has toured the Geo Pomona waste-to-energy project in Zimbabwe as part of a broader effort to deepen understanding of sustainable waste management and renewable energy solutions, Dailypost.com.gh can reveal.

The visit, which formed part of a study tour on climate change and national development, brought together participants from Senior Command and Staff Course Number 34. It offered the Ghanaian officers a rare opportunity to witness first-hand how waste is being transformed into clean energy and economic value.

Squadron Leader Elizabeth Fadilatu Salifu of the Ghana Air Force expressed admiration for the facility’s ability to turn a once-polluted site into a hub of innovation and sustainability.

“We are students from Ghana and today, we are here to appreciate this waste-to-energy plant,” she said during the visit. “We are impressed that Geo Pomona is taking interest in promoting clean energy.”

The plant, located near Harare, is currently undergoing final development stages and is set to become one of the most advanced waste-to-energy facilities in the region. Once fully operational, it is expected to process up to 1,000 tonnes of waste daily and generate 22 megawatts of electricity—enough to feed thousands of homes through Zimbabwe’s national grid.

Major General Matthew Essien, Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, described the tour as transformational.

“My perception of waste management has changed completely,” he admitted. “What I’ve seen here is remarkable. Waste is not just waste — it is a resource and an economic asset. This is a model that should be replicated across Africa.”

Dean of the Command College, Napoleon Kurentin, echoed those views, describing the project as “a strategic environmental protection measure.”

The Geo Pomona site, which was previously an open and unmanaged dumpsite, has undergone a complete transformation. It now features international-standard sports facilities and is rapidly advancing towards completing its waste-to-energy infrastructure.

Taking the delegation on a guided tour, Geo Pomona CEO Dilesh Nguwaya reflected on the journey.

“This area used to be an open dumpsite, even home to squatters. Today, it is a symbol of innovation and environmental renewal,” he said. “We’re not just generating electricity—we’re building a model for sustainable urban development.”

Nguwaya also confirmed that construction of the plant’s core systems will accelerate in the coming month, signalling a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s shift towards renewable energy and modern waste management.

The Ghanaian delegation’s visit highlights the growing pan-African interest in circular economy models, where environmental challenges are addressed through innovative and profitable solutions.

The visit also underscores Ghana’s increasing investment in climate-resilient policies and sustainable technologies as the nation faces growing pressure to modernise waste infrastructure and diversify energy sources.

With Ghana’s urban centres facing similar waste disposal and energy supply challenges, the Geo Pomona model offers valuable lessons on how waste can be harnessed not only to reduce environmental impact but also to generate economic returns.
