Women should usher themselves into politics through assembly elections

Apam, June 28, GNA – The Gomoa District Chief Executive, Ms Joyce Mildred Aidoo, has urged women to use district assembly elections as a springboard to usher them into politics. She said it has been proven the world over that leadership had developed faster in countries that had a high percentage of women in government.

The DCE made the call at the last meeting of the Gomoa District Assembly at Apam on Tuesday.

She said the practice of gender stereotyping, an aspect of our culture, which has resulted in women taking the back seat in all things including politics should end now. “Women should come out of their shells and compete with our men for seats in the assemblies,” she urged and added that this was the time our women should rise and take the political arena by storm. Ms Aidoo announced that Gomoa had been selected among other districts for the implementation of the Millennium Challenge Accounts project and appealed to traditional rulers and landowners to release lands for the project.

She also called for support and commitment of individual citizens in making the project a success.

The DCE said the Assembly had constructed eight school blocks and three toilets this year and work had started on two teacher’s quarters, three more schools and a DCE’s residence were also to be constructed. The Community Water and Sanitation Programme is to undertake 14 institutional latrines and five boreholes in the District, she announced.

Ms Aidoo said the Assembly had collected 229,432,800 cedis out of a mid year budget of 416,761,500 cedis of its internally generated revenue being 55.05 per cent as against last year’s 194,226,040 cedis representing 23.30 per cent. She said the applicants selected for the youth employment programme would start training by the middle of July 2006. At the meeting, the Assembly presented a cheque for 8,000,000 cedis to the District Director of Health Services to offset part of medical bills incurred by Apam Catholic Mission Hospital on accident victims. 28 June 06
