Woman drowns in Birim River

Akim Oda(E/R), Aug. 16, GNA- Tragedy hit a family at Akim Oda when a 26-year-old mother of three, was drowned in Birim river on Thursday morning.

The victim, whose name was given as Amma Kwakyewaa, was a petty trader and she was said to be crossing the river in a small canoe with three others from Akim Oda, to purchase maize from farmers at the other end of the river when the canoe capsized.

Police at Akim Oda told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday that the three others managed to swim safely to the bank of the river while Kwakyewaa got drowned.

The body has not been recovered, police said. 16 Aug. 2003
