Winneba, July 12, GNA – The Winneba Premix Committee has given financial support to 100 petty traders operating at Winneba Junction.
The beneficiaries, who sell oranges, banana, bread, ice water, plantain, corn and vegetables, each received Gc100 which is non-refundable.
Nii Ephraim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive and Mr Kwaku Nicol, Chairman of the National Premix Committee who jointly made the presentation, said the beneficiaries formed the first batch.
They said traders at Winneba junction were chosen after a survey they conducted revealed that most of the traders are school dropouts, orphans and single parents who are struggling to fend for themselves.
The committee therefore found it necessary to use part of its profit from their two-year operation to support the traders, they said.
They said the programme would be extended to other areas in the Municipality.
Later in an interview with the Ghana News Agency Nenyi Monie Kakor IV, Chief fisherman for Effutu, said since the Committee started operating, it had built its own petrol filling station that include offices and store valued at Gc80, 000.
He said the committee had repaired all street lights and replaced all faulty bulbs at the Winneba beach at a cost of Gc20, 000.
The Chief Fisherman advised fishermen who fish with light to stop the practice before they are caught by the task force.
