Accra, Aug. 24, GNA – Presidents of Bar Associations in West Africa have resolved to supplement the work of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by promoting rule of law, fundamental human rights and democracy in the Sub-Region.
In a communiqu=E9 they further resolved to promote and maintain the independence of the Judiciary in member states, a statement signed by Mr Paul Adu-Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) said on Tuesday.
The statement said the resolution was passed at the inaugural meeting of West African Bar Association (WABA) held in Abuja, Nigeria. The delegates pledged to co-ordinate the activities of National Bar Associations within the West African Sub-Region and strengthen professional links among members of the legal profession, the statement said.
The meeting attracted delegates from Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Benin and Liberia.
The statement said at the meeting interim officers were elected with Mr Femi Falama, Secretary General of Africa Bar Association, as President of WABA;
Mr Paul Adu-Gyamfi, First Vice President, Mr Abdul Kabele Camara, President of Bar Association of Guinea, Second Vice President and Mr Waidi Moustapha, President of Bar Association of Benin, Secretary-General.
