President John Dramani Mahama has expressed regret over the capacity of the Bukom Boxing Arena, acknowledging that the 4,000-seat venue may no longer meet the growing enthusiasm for boxing in Ghana. Speaking at the Jubilee House during a visit by former British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, Mahama admitted, “I thought 4,000 was enough, but it seems we need a much bigger arena to accommodate the rising interest.”
The high-profile meeting, which also included Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and Sharaf Mahama of Legacy Rise Sports, highlighted the sport’s expanding prominence in Ghana. President Mahama expressed his ambition to name Joshua an African ambassador for boxing, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent on the continent.
Reflecting on the arena’s original purpose as a boxing academy, Mahama suggested that his return to the presidency provides an opportunity to revisit and expand the project. “The arena was meant to serve as a hub for developing young talent, and this growing interest proves there’s room to dream bigger,” he added.
