Yaw Ampadu Ofori, a Water supplier, was on Friday remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for attempting to commit crime and robbery.
Yaw, who pleaded not guilty to the charges was, however, remanded into police custody by the court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri to reappear on May 30.
Presenting the facts of the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh told the court that the complainant is self-employed and resides at Madina Estates while the accused is a water supplier and resides at Adenta.
He said on December 21, 2013 at about 0200 hours, the complainant’s wife woke him up to alert him of some unusual noise in the compound.
He said the complainant peeped through the window and saw the accused and three other persons in the compound holding cutlasses, chisels and iron bars and were about to break into a boutique in the house.
The prosecution said the complainant then fired his licensed single barrel gun towards their direction. The bullet hit one of them and he fell on the ground while the accused person and his accomplices jumped over the fenced wall and run away.
DSP Morkeh told the court that, the police proceeded to the scene of the crime after information was sent to the police information room by the complainant.
He said when they got to the scene, they saw the deceased lying in a pool of blood dead. The body was conveyed to the police hospital mortuary and the deceased was identified as an ex-convict.
He said in March 2014, relatives and friends of the deceased came to the Madina police to enquire about the deceased and they were told he was dead. They then told the police that the deceased, accused, and two other friends went out on the said date but he, (the deceased) did not return with them.
The prosecution said when they inquired from the accused person, who was wearing the slippers of the deceased, he told them that “there was a ‘scatter in the night” at their operation ground and does not know his where about.
DSP Morkeh said upon receipt of the information, the police took statements from them as witnesses.
On May 8, 2014, the police succeeded in arresting the accused person after several attempts and a caution statement was taken from him, but he denied the offence.
