Ablekuma North NPP Candidate Rejects EC’s Decision to Rerun Polls in 19 Stations

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, has openly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the constituency, calling the move unjustified and politically motivated.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Channel One’s Newsroom’, Madam Afriyie expressed deep frustration over what she described as a sudden reversal by the EC after what she claims was near-complete collation of the constituency’s results.

“We have gone through all the collation and were left with just three polling stations to complete the process,” she insisted. “So what changed?”

According to her, the EC had earlier testified under oath before Parliament that only three polling stations remained undeclared, which, she argues, makes the decision to rerun voting in 19 polling stations deeply questionable.

The controversy follows the December 7 general election, during which disputes over result authenticity led the EC to order a rerun in specific locations. But Madam Afriyie believes the decision was influenced by pressure from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“If the NDC is bent on taking the seat, and the EC now suddenly shifts its position to agree with them, despite what they swore to in Parliament, then where are we as a country?” she questioned. “We are not agreeing to this.”

The EC has not yet issued a detailed public statement explaining the shift from its earlier position, but it maintains that the decision was taken in the interest of transparency and electoral credibility.

The situation has sparked renewed debate over the neutrality and consistency of the Electoral Commission, with political watchers calling for clarity and calm ahead of any further electoral actions in the Ablekuma North constituency.
