Water reservoir site turned into place of convenience

Apowa (W/R), Sept. 7, GNA – Mr Nicholas Nyarko, Chairman of the Apowa Youth Association (AYA), has noted with concern the use of sites around the only underground water reservoir in the town as a place of convenience by some residents.

He said the practice, if it continues unchecked, could lead to the outbreak of cholera, typhoid and other water borne diseases among the people.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Apowa near Takoradi on Tuesday, Mr Nyarko said the sites around the reservoir had become unsightly and smelly as a result of the practice.

He said members of the Association would soon embark on regular clean up exercises around the reservoir and provide streetlights as a way to check the use of the site around the facility by unscrupulous people as toilet.

He expressed regret that even though several homes had public toilets, some unidentified persons continue to defecate at the place and called for more vigilance among the people to stop the practice. Mr Nyarko said he had contacted the health authorities and the Metropolitan Assembly for assistance to check the practice.
