Water, Electricity Conservation Clubs Inaugurated In Kumasi

Kumasi, ( Ashanti Region) 4 Nov. The rehabilitation of the Barekese Dam by the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC) to increase water supply to Kumasi from 15 million gallons a day to 18 million gallons will be completed by January next year. This was disclosed by Nii Okai Kotei, Assistant Director of the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation at the inauguration of the Water and Electricity Conservation Club in Kumasi at the weekend. The Club is made up of students from Opoku Ware Secondary School (OWASS), Prempeh College, Yaa Asantewa Secondary School (YAGS), Kumasi High School, Saint Hubert’s Seminary and Kumasi Girls Secondary School. Nii Kotei said the supply will later be increased to 21 million gallons daily but said the present demand for water in the Metropolis calls for conservation by consumers. Nii Kotei said the GWSC will offer the club all the necessary support in its efforts to educate the general public on the need to conserve water. The Acting Ashanti Regional Commercial Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG), Mr. Leonard Tetteh Obi, said the formation of the Club is important especially at this time when the demand for Electricity is very high. He said the high bills being presently received by consumers emanate from the careless use of Electricity and hoped that the club will help educate the public on the proper use of power. Master Denis Addo, Founder and President of the club, said he was motivated to form the Club out of his concern for the preservation of the country’s resources, particularly water and electricity.
