WANEP-Ghana Commemorates International Women’s Day.

As part of activities to celebrate the International Women’s Day, 8th March, 2013, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, Ghana (WANEP – Ghana) with support from STAR-Ghana has held a radio discussion to plead with the general public to remain calm and uphold peace during and after the court’s verdict on the 2012 elections.
WANEP- Ghana saw the need to let women use this day meant to celebrate them to appeal to the general public to be calm and maintain peace in the northern region and the country as a whole, during and after the court’s decision because in the event of violence emerging, women will be the most affected.
The discussion was held between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00am and was championed by some members of the Women in Peace Building Network (WIPNET) in the Tamale Metropolis. The discussion mainly urged the general public especially the youth that no matter their political affiliation they should remain calm and maintain peace during and after the Supreme Court’s decision. They also called on fellow women to be advocates of peace in their communities at this time. The main target of their messages was the youth who are mainly misled into engaging in violence with the women calling on them to beware of people who would deceive them into causing violence. The women told the youth that the peace the country is enjoying now should not be taken for granted as it is easier to destroy something than to create it.
A number of people including men and women called in during the phone-in session to commend WANEP- Ghana and STAR –Ghana for using women to advocate for peace on a day that is meant to celebrate them.
