Accra, Nov. 22, GNA – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced on Monday that the entire results of candidates from 36 schools have been withheld after the July/August 2004 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) because of irregularities. A statement signed in Accra by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Senior Public Affairs Officer, said further investigations were being carried out into the irregularities committed.
The statement did not release the names of the schools.
The statement said it has released results of the Examination and advised candidates to contact their various schools and not the Council.
It said out of 96,668 candidates who registered for the examination, 38,718 (40 per cent) passed in seven subjects and above, 10,281 (11 per cent) passed in six subjects and 8,445 (nine per cent) passed in five subjects.
It said 7,459 candidates (eight per cent) passed in four subjects, 6,359 (seven per cent) passed in three subjects, 5,287 (five per cent) passed in two subjects and 4,564 (five per cent) passed in one subject. WAEC said 3,374 (3.5 per cent) failed in all subjects while 441 (0.5 per cent) were absent.
The statement said 52 candidates had their entire results cancelled and 236 candidates had their subject results cancelled for being involved in examination irregularities.
These irregularities included bringing in foreign materials, such as blank pieces of paper, notes and textbooks into the examination hall, receiving help from non-candidates such as invigilators, supervisors and teachers, collusion, impersonation and leakage of examination question papers.
