The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has apprehended 14 individuals, comprising teachers, students, and invigilators, for alleged examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Arrests were made at various centers, including Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, revealed that the number of arrests is expected to increase as investigations continue.
Candidates from affected schools will undergo thorough scrutiny before their results are released.
Some notable incidents include the shutdown of the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi after multiple mobile phones were seized from candidates, with students relocated to WAEC’s regional office to complete their exams under strict supervision.
Additionally, two impersonators in Kasoa were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment each, while an accomplice received eight months.
The proprietor and a teacher of a Christian school in Kukurantumi were arrested for creating a WhatsApp group to share exam questions with students. Ebenezer Fynn was also arrested for impersonation at Abura Dunkwa and is assisting with investigations.
John Kapi emphasized WAEC’s commitment to maintaining exam integrity, and the council will continue to enforce stringent measures to curb malpractice.
