Funsi, (UWR), March, 14, GNA- The Wa East District has no electricity, potable water and communication facilities to facilitate socio-economic activities. The small-town water project at Funsi, the district capital, expected to supply water to the area was not functioning and about 5,000 inhabitants have to rely on five boreholes for water. A visit to the Funsi by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday showed that workers could not use computers and other office equipment because of the lack of power and they had to go Wa to work on official documents.
Speaking to GNA, Mr Albert Bawa Sulley, Vice Chairman of the Sissala Union, said when the district was created the people thought the area would be developed and lamented “Imagine, for the past four years no effort had been made to bring electricity and communication facilities to the area.”
He urged government to extend electricity and water supply to the district and appealed to communication companies to extend their services to the area.
Mr Sulley called government to ensure equitable development to enable the district catch up with older districts. He called for the building of bridges on Kulun, Ambalara and Jullu Rivers to facilitate economic activities. The Wa East District was created in 2004 and since then no community in the district had been connected to electricity affecting, socio-economic activities. Communication companies were skeptical about establishing networks in the district because they had to use generators for network services, which would cost them much more money to run the machinery.
