Abetifi (E/R), May 31, GNA- The Vision Aid Overseas (VAO), a UK based non-governmental organisation in collaboration with the World Vision International (WVI), Ghana, have freely distributed 1,475 reading and sight glasses to people in five communities in the Kwahu South and West districts.
Five optometrists and one dispensing optician from the VAO distributed the glasses after a 10-day eye screening exercise for 2,017 people at Hwehwee, Mpraeso, Akwasiho, Nkawkaw and Wawase. A total of 123 people, who were detected to have cataract and glaucoma were referred to the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw for optical operation.
The leader of the team, Ms Collette Hartle advised the people to undertake hygienic practices and to clean their eyes regularly, due to the dusty nature of the environment. She advised that those, who received the glasses, should use them regularly to avoid straining of the eyes to correct other defections to improve their sight.
A Nurse at the Koforidua Regional Hospital, Mrs Gladys Okrah, advised those, who were referred to the hospital for cataract and glaucoma operations to report at the health centre without delay for early treatment to avoid blindness.
