UTAG condemns KNUST lecturers support for NPP

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has slammed the decision of some lecturers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to declare support for the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2016 elections.

The lecturers told the media Monday that it will be unfortunate for the intelligentsia to sit aloof and watch the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) destroy the Ghanaian economy. They are therefore urging their colleague lecturers in other universities in the country to follow suit and help them canvass votes for the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition ahead of next year’s elections.

Commenting on the development, the general secretary of UTAG Samuel Atintonu told Accra-based Citi FM that it is not right for lecturers to meddle in active politics.

“From our perspective, we wouldn’t say it is appropriate because as lecturers we teach everybody and our students may belong to different parties in the country.

“As individuals , the lecturers may support their respective parties but declaring support in a group like they have done, is inappropriate”.
