Use sporting activities to unite the people

Zabzugu, (NR) May 31, GNA – The Zabzugu/Tatale District Director of Education, Mr Akwesi Akaba Braimah has called on educational institutions in the area to use sporting activities to forge unity amongst the students and the people.

He noted that since sports ensures discipline among competitors and enjoins them to abide by rules of the game, it was necessary for the spectators to emulate it, adding that sports brings people together to ensure togetherness and oneness. Mr Braimah said this in his opening remarks at the 18th Zone Six Inter- Schools Sports Competition which is under way at the Zabzugu Senior High School Sports Park in the Zabzugu/Tatale District of the Northern Region.

Nine Schools are taking part in the four days competition in Volleyball, boys and girls soccer, athletics and handball. The competing schools include Yendi Senior High School, Zabzugu Senior High School, Tatale Agric. Senior High School, Saboba St. Joseph Technical School, Gusheigu Senior High School and Chereponi Senior High School among others. During an opening football match, Zabzugu Senior High School beat Saboba St. Joseph Technical School one nil through a penalty kick converted by Iddi Osuman in the ninth minute. Mr Umar Abdul Wahab, Zabzugu/Tatale District Chief Executive called on the youth to take sports serious by combining it with their academic works and to concentrate on their studies. He noted that regular participation in sports activities will go a long way in aiding the people from suffering from various diseases which are related to lack of exercise.

The DCE advised the participants to stay away from the use of drugs, premarital sex and other social vices so that they can develop to get the status of sportsmen and women like the Abedi Pele’s, Drogba’s, Essien’s, Myles Mills and Vida Yeboah’s among others. Mr Wahab said that it is government’s plan to develop the education sector and sports department with the supply of the needed facilities such as reading materials, classrooms, school buses and incentives for teachers to encourage enrolment, teaching and learning. He advised the competitors to take the competition serious for them to be selected top represent the District at the Inter-Regional Sports Festival and to exercise self control to achieve the needed success.
