Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) and political parties to use Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings to address electoral disagreements before the December polls.
The Asante monarch has also called on the leaders of political parties to guard against intemperate language during their campaigns.
The Asantehene made the remarks when the Minister for the Interior, Prosper Bani, and the Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor, called on him at the Manhyia Palace on Thursday July 28 in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
“Peace is what we seek. No investor will want to invest in a non-peaceful country, so it is our duty and responsibility as Ghanaians to work together for peace because we have only one Ghana. All the political parties and the EC must remain fair and transparent in their activities ahead of the elections. Politicians must explain to the electorate why they are seeking their mandate during campaigns; it should not be about insults. I am certain Ghanaians will support whoever emerges as the winner after the elections,” he stated.
Otumfuo added: “The EC and the political parties must resolve their challenges during IPAC meetings, I will even suggest the Inspector General of Police is invited to IPAC meetings so that he will be reliably informed of the consensus between the parties and the EC, so that if any party flouts what has been agreed, the law can be applied. We need this to maintain the peace in the country,” the overlord of Asanteman noted.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also expressed concerns about the influx of Chinese nationals engaging in illegal mining in the country. He urged the Immigration Service to intensify their checks at the borders to monitor the entry of foreign nationals.
