Kumasi, Jan. 21, GNA – The United States (US) Embassy in collaboration with the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP) has organised a Career Fair for some selected second cycle schools in the Kumasi metropolis.
The fair, which attracted over 300 students selected from the Prempeh College, Kumasi Academy, Opoku Ware School and Opoku Ware Girls Vocational Institute, was aimed at providing them with an insight into the various courses at the universities and how to make the correct career choices.
Addressing the students, Miss Marylyn Owusu, Programme Officer of the United States of America (USA) Advisory Centre in Kumasi, said the lack of information on career counselling among students had been a major problem facing most students in their choice for careers.
Miss Owusu said the centre was to assist students to search and apply for admissions into various universities in the USA.
The Programme Officer explained that career counselling was the only probable way of curbing the situation of many students visiting the centre without knowing what careers to pursue.
She appealed to the students to take advantage of the fair to enable them to make the correct careers in future.
Mr Joseph Owusu, Manager of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of the CEDEP, said his organisation aimed at promoting social, economic and civic rights of the people in pursuance of charitable development.
He said the programme, the first of its kind to be organised would greatly enhance the student’s choices of the right careers and asked them to take the fair very seriously.
Mr A. Owusu-Acheaw, Headmaster of Prempeh College, said the unemployment problem among graduates in the country could be attributed to the fact that most of them did not make the right career choices. He noted that the choice of a job was not done overnight and advised students to know a lot about career and counselling to enable them to offer the correct courses at the universities to help them secure jobs.
