US Ambassador Commissions midwife’s quarters

Kona (Ash), Aug 21, GNA- A 28 million-cedis quarters for Midwives, funded by the United States Embassy in Ghana, was on Tuesday commissioned at Kona in the Afigya-Sekyere District of Ashanti. The project, initiated by the ‘Kona Kroye Kuo’, a benevolent society, was supplemented with communal labour by the people.

Mrs Mary Carlin Yates, US Ambassador to Ghana who inaugurated the quarters, commended the people of Kona for their high communal spirit. She said she was particularly pleased with the execution of the project because there were some communities receiving assistance from the embassy who had not worked to its satisfaction.

Mrs Yates said the development of every nation depended on the health of its people and that this was the basis for the embassy’s assistant to the people.

She entreated the community to take good care of the building by maintaining it.

Dr Samuel Adjei, Afigya-Sekyere District Director of Health Services, said lack of residential accommodation for health personnel in the communities was one of the factors militating against effective health delivery in the district.

He said the district has 16 health facilities with qualified personnel but regretted that about 80 percent of them were without appropriate accommodation.

Dr Adjei expressed gratitude to the US Embassy for funding the project and commended the chief, elders and people of Kona for their spirit in completing the project.

Mr Ben Abankwa, the District Chief Executive, also expressed gratitude to the US Embassy and gave the assurance that the district assembly would assist any community that initiates its own development project.

He said the assembly had voted 80 million cedis for the completion of the Kona Junior Secondary School (JSS).
