Koforidua Members of the Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana National Union of Tree Growers have planted over 2,000 acres of teak trees and more than 100 acres of different tree species in the region. Most of the large-scale afforestation of the union were located in the Yilo Krobo, East Akim, Fanteakwa and the Afram Plains districts. This was announced by Mr Victor Doe, Eastern Regional chairman of the union at a press conference in Koforidua. He said the union would hold its general meeting at Koforidua on May one, to plan how to sustain members’ interest in tree planting. He said the meeting would provide a forum for members to share ideas and experiences and also find solutions to the problem of land acquisition.
Mr Doe, who is a timber merchant, observed that at this time of the country’s development, anybody involved in the timber industry should think about the sustainability of the sector through active afforestation. Mr Raphael Kofi Ahaligah, first national vice-chairman of the union said the meeting would discuss the establishment of tree nurseries and effective management of trees.
