UNIDO to train 750 kayayee

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in collaboration with Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare, will train 750 kayayee (head potters) in Agbobloshie, a suburb of Accra in vocational skills, to be self-employed.

Madam Virpi Stucki Project Manager, UNIDO, who made this known when she led a three-member delegation to pay a courtesy call in Accra on Nii Armah Ashietey, the sector Minister, said the move is to combat rural-urban migration, which has engulfed the Greater Accra Metropolis.

She said UNIDO had instituted a project christened: “From Ghana to Liberia: Reintegration of Liberian refugees through multi-skills training for sustainable livelihoods and poverty alleviation.”

She said with financial support from Japan, UNIDO has trained Ghanaians and Liberians living in or near Bujumbura, in the Central Region, in micro-industrial skills training in various subjects such as baking, beauty care, dressmaking, information technology, masonry and welding.

Madam Stucki pledged the organisation’s unflinching support to reach out to developing countries to facilitate sustainable vocational skills development and raise levels of skill competencies to international standards.

Mr Ashietey commended UNIDO for its efforts towards skill training, saying it would help alleviate some of the problems confronting the country. He said there is the need to arm the youth with the needed skills in order to be productive to way them from social vices such as robbery and prostitution.
