UG honours Prof. Kuenyehia

The University of Ghana (UG) on Saturday conferred Honorary Meritorious Service Award on Professor Mrs Akua Kuenyehia, the Dean of the Faculty of Law for distinguish service to the University and Ghana.

Prof Kuenyehia, who was recently elected to serve on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and has also been elected as the first Vice President of the court, received the award at the 2003 Congregation of UG at Legon, near Accra.

The University also conferred on Dr Grace Parkins, the Best Teacher Award for the Sciences; Professor Cletus Experience Kofi Kumado, Best Teacher Award for the Humanities; and Mr Enoch Odartey Mills, Best Worker Award.

They all received a certificate and an undisclosed amount of money and the School of Performing Arts received them unto the presidential podium with appellations in drum language.

In a welcoming address, Dr Ishmael E. Yamson, Chairman of the University Council said only education at the highest level and at its most cutting edge could propel the nation forward in the present knowledge-based global economy.

He, therefore, expressed concern about constraints of tertiary education in the country – the increasing intake of students yearly, and the challenges of how to organise congregational ceremonies.

Dr Yamson said the University Council had accepted proposal for decentralisation of congregation ceremonies to ensure that each graduate received special intimate touch of the joy of completing a tertiary education with laurels.

A graduate, Ms Anna Plange, who read the valedictory address on behalf of the others, pledged to play a role in turning the wheels of Ghana’s economy from a low income to a middle income earner in other for the country to compete effectively with other countries in the globalised village.

The Chancellor, Nana Wereko Ampem II, chaired the ceremony that was graced with the presence of Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, Minister of Education, Ms Christiana Churcher, Minister in Charge of Primary, Secondary and Girl-Child Education and students, parents and friends of the graduates.
