UEW establishes scholarship for female science students

Asante Mampong (Ash), Oct. 4, GNA – The University of Education Winneba has established a scholarship scheme to assist female students who are pursuing science programmes at the university. The scholarship scheme, which is being funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in the United States of America aims at motivating more females to undertake science related programmes at the university.

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, Vice Chancellor of the University, made this known on Saturday at the matriculation of 499 new students at the College of Agricultural Education (CAGRIC) of the University at Asante Mampong. Out of the number, 77, representing 15.4 per cent were female. Professor Asabere-Ameyaw expressed concern about the low enrolment rate, especially among females at the University and attributed it to lack of academic and residential accommodation for both lecturers and students.

He called on the government, the GETfund Secretariat and other stakeholders to support the University in order to increase its enrolment and provide quality teaching and learning on campus. He advised the students to make proper use of their time, avoid gossiping, alcoholism and other forms of drug abuse, offensive dressing and promiscuous lifestyles on campus. Professor Richard Tuyee Awuah, Principal of the College, advised the matriculants to exploit the academic freedom on campus to their benefit and not to their detriment. He said agriculture was the bedrock of most developed economies and urged those who were specializing in agriculture to count themselves as active participants in the nation’s quest for accelerated economic and industrial development.
