Two granted Ghc1 million bail

An Accra Circuit has granted a bail of GH¢1 million to Mr Joel Nettey, President of Advertizing Association of Ghana and Mr Mustapha Ghande, a driver with two sureties each.

The bail was granted to the two last Friday for standing surety for Jude Mathias Alistair, a Canadian Businessman involved in an alleged $4 million gold business deal.

On Thursday, Mr Nettey failed to turn up but the Circuit Court ‘9’ Presided over by Justice Boakye Yiadom handed down a bail of Gh¢2 million with three sureties on the head of Mustapha Ghande.

Mr Ghande failed to meet the bail requirement and was sent to the Darkuman Police Cells till Friday when he and Mr. Nettey appeared before the court the following day.

According to the Director of Commercial Crime Unit (CCRU), Superintendent Felix Mawusi, the sureties were before court because Mr Alistair was asked to be reporting to the Police regularly to assist in the investigations but has since failed to do so.

He told the court that Mr Alistair requested three weeks travel time from the Police to go to Dubai and get his paper works together for the case against him and had since been gone for 10 weeks.

After some legal arguments over the bail terms between the prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Cletus Amannor and the solicitor for both sureties, Dennis Adjei Dwomoh, who also represents the suspect Mr Mathias, the court decided to give a much liberal bail conditions of Gh¢500,000 with two sureties each and to reappear on the October 16, 2014 to help locate the Canadian businessman.

Mr Alistair, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of M.A Resources Limited in the Eastern Region, was arrested on June 24, 2014 this year by the CCRU of the CID after a Ghanaian businessman, Mr Henry Osei complained to the Police over his $4 million cash locked up with the Canadian, as proceeds from delivery of gold to him (Alistair) in Dubai.

Mr Alistair was subsequently granted bail with two sureties, namely Mustapha Ghande and Joel Nettey while investigations continued.
