Two girls drown in an abandoned diamond pit

Akwatia, Oct. 02, GNA – Two girls drowned in an abandoned diamond pit at Asubone near Akwatia when they went to swim last Saturday. They were identified as Akosua Ningo 15, also known as Akosua Obolo, and Amma Doris, nine years.

Two other girls who went to swim with them but survived were Elizabeth Dunyo, 11 and Margaret Korang, 12.

An eyewitness told the Ghana News Agency that children in the area mostly swim in such pits where the pools in them were used to wash diamond bearing gravels by small-scale diamond winners. He said owner of the diamond concession who washes gravels in the pit had on several occasions warned children from swimming in the pits. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Desmond Owusu Boampong, Akwatia District Police Commander, confirmed the incident and said the corpses had been deposited at Saint Dominic’s Hospital for autopsy.
