Two Ghanaian Pilgrims Die in Mecca During 2025 Hajj, Five Repatriated Over Visa Issues

Two Ghanaian nationals have died in Mecca while undertaking this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, according to a confirmation from the Ghana Hajj Taskforce.

Roughly 6,000 pilgrims from Ghana made the journey to Saudi Arabia to participate in the 2025 Hajj, one of the largest gatherings of Muslims globally. The Taskforce did not disclose the identities of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding their deaths but expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

In addition to the reported fatalities, five Ghanaian pilgrims have been repatriated due to issues related to visa irregularities.

Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini, Head of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Hajj Taskforce, clarified the situation. He emphasised that the pilgrims were not deported for criminal reasons.

“Some said they were deported, but we choose to use the word ‘repatriated.’ Deportation connotes some criminality, but these people who have returned have not committed any crime. It was an error in the issuance of their visa,” he explained.

Alhaji Fuseini also indicated that efforts are underway to correct the visa issues and possibly enable the affected individuals to rejoin the pilgrimage.

“Some attempts to realign the visas resulted in unfortunate mistakes where their visas were withdrawn. I can assure you that we are making every effort to get them to go back,” he added.

The annual Hajj pilgrimage is a deeply significant spiritual journey for Muslims worldwide. This year’s pilgrimage has drawn millions to the holy sites in Mecca and Medina, with Ghana maintaining its strong tradition of participation.

Authorities have assured the Ghanaian public that they are committed to the welfare and safety of all pilgrims and will continue to provide updates as necessary.
