Twenty-seven trained in grasscutter rearing at Adomfe

Adomfe (Ash), March 14, GNA – Twenty-seven farmers have attended a 10-day workshop on grasscutter rearing at Adomfe near Bompata in the Asante-Akim South District.

Organised by the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) under the Rural Enterprises Project (REP), the workshop was funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Ghana.

The workshop, which was aimed at equipping the participants with the requisite skills to go into grasscutter farming, saw them through feeding, vaccinating, handling and caging grasscutters. Mr Isaac Owusu-Asante, Business Development Officer of the BAC, addressing the closing ceremony, said the REP was committed to alleviating poverty at the grassroots through the training of the people in various vocations.

He observed that most of their clients in the District possessed business potentials, which could enhance the district’s economic base if appropriately harnessed and urged the participants to take advantage of the project to improve their livelihood. Dr Lord Justice Gyamfi-Fenteng, District Chief Executive, urged the participants to set up their own businesses on a small-scale with the little resources at their disposal, pledging the Assembly’s support to promising ones.

He advocated the formation of groups in order to access various credit facilities at the Assembly to expand their businesses and also to maximize profit.

The DCE noted that the Assembly had ceased giving loans to individuals, disclosing that over 200 million cedis disbursed under the Poverty Alleviation Fund was yet to be retrieve. 14 March 07
