Demands for the restoration of End-of-Service Benefits (ESBs), frozen by government 11 years ago, is set to trigger off another industrial action. The industrial action over ESBs is being initiated by the Greater Accra Regional Council of Labour, which has directed all districts and local affiliates, to hoist red flags at their workplaces from Monday. The regional council of labour at its last annual conference exhaustively debated the frozen ESBs and its attendant hardships on the entire labour force.
The Council’s Chairman Wilson Agana and Acting Regional Secretary Maxwell Akoto-Mireku noted that while the freeze deprived majority of Ghanaian workers of the ESB, politicians continue to enjoy it, thus raising issues of equity and moral justification. For this reason all Regional and District Councils of Labour have unanimously resolved at various meetings to endorse the restoration of the ESB.
The Regional Council has also embraced the recent decision by the Tema District Council of Labour to embark on a strike action. They have resolved to fight for the restoration of ESB and advised that the fight should not be seen as politically motivated but rather to correct policies, which are not in the interest of workers.
