Trucks full of scraps for export intercepted

Tema, April 16, GNA — The Tema police, acting upon a tip-off on Friday intercepted two articulated trucks loaded with scraps meant for export at the Tema Industrial Area.

The trucks whose registration numbers are being withheld for security reasons have been impounded at the Tema Regional Police Command.

Briefing newsmen at Tema, Mrs Agnes Sikanartey, Tema Regional Police Commander said the unit received information from officials of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Presidential Special Initiatives that some people were loading scraps at an obscure place at the Tema heavy industrial area for export.

Based upon the information, police personnel were dispatched to the scene where the men were loading the trucks with scraps en route to the Tema harbour for export.

She said there is a ban on exportation of scraps in the country because the Steel Companies are either collapsing or folded up due to lack of scraps to work with.

The Police Commander said the suspects have been remanded for investigations to be conducted into the case. Meanwhile, an expatriate woman has claimed ownership of the scraps.
