Tribunal remands two people on robbery charge

Tema, June 21, GNA — The Tema Community tribunal chaired by Captain Philip Agbeyomey (rtd) on Monday remanded two people arraigned on charges of robbing Allship Limited, a private clearing and forwarding company of items estimated at 25 million cedis.

Christian Amudzi, a militiaman and Emmanuel Aphedor, a labourer pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on July five, 1999. Prosecuting Chief Inspector Margaret Nunoo, told the tribunal that on June seven, at about 01:30 hours, the two accused persons, among others now at large, stormed the yard of Allship company.

She said they were armed with guns and wore masks during the operation at Allship, which is opposite the Tema Lube Oil Company, at the Tema Industrial Area. She said the armed robbers attacked the security man on duty, tied his hands, blindfolded him and locked him up in one of the offices of the company.

They then entered the safety and health office, broke into a container and made away with items including tyres, jacks, safety boots, helmets, car batteries, Honda generator, fire extinguishers and car engine bearings all, estimated at 25 million cedis.

The prosecution said the security man was rescued the following morning by workers of the company, when they went to work and made a report to the community one Police.

Inspector Nunoo said upon a tip-off a search was conducted at the house of Amudzi at Tema New Town on June eight and two pieces of tarpaulin and a radiator and a car tape, which were among the stolen items were retrieved.

Amudzi told the Police investigators that it was Aphedor, who assisted him to carry the items, which were dumped on a footpath to New Town. He explained that he kept them in his house so that he could inform the militia authorities later.
