Traders file contempt of court case against KMA Chief Executive

Kumasi, May 03, GNA – The Railway Traders Association in Kumasi has filed a motion at a Kumasi High Court citing Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive and her Co-ordinating Director, Mr Albert Ampong, for contempt of court.

Also cited for contempt of court are the Commanding Officer of the Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Ashanti Regional Police Commander and the Estate Officer of the KMA for the involvement of armed military and police personnel to forcibly eject members of the association from occupying the 102 shops of the Railway Store Complex. They are to appear before the high court on Monday, May 08.

A motion said the wilful acts of interference with the administration of justice and acts calculated to bring the administration of justice into disrepute by forcibly driving out members of the association from occupying the 102 shops is in gross violation of the orders of the high court.

Briefing journalists on the background of the litigation in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mr Kofi Larbi, Secretary of the Association said a Kumasi high court, presided by Justice J.K Abrahams on April 24th 2006, granted members of the association an order to occupy the 102 shops of the Store Complex.

He said upon the decision of the court, members of the association entered into the possession of the 102 shops on April 25. But on that same day the KMA chief Executive and the Co-ordinating Director as well as the Estates Officer arrived at the premises of the shops with armed military and police personnel and drove the members away at gun point.
