Torrential rain, floods hinder movement in Accra

A heavy downpour in Accra Tuesday morning would most certainly hinder productivity in government offices, as well as private business in the capital, for the day.

The rain which started around 0600 hours and continued for nearly four hours, caused severe flooding in most places and impeded vehicular movement considerably as most roads, particularly those in low-lying areas, were heavily flooded.

The main road right from Sakumono Estates through Nungua, Teshie and Labadi was taken over by deep floods, rendering commuting between those areas and Accra Central almost impossible.

Most drivers who had set off from home before 0600 hours with the hope of beating the weather ended up seeking refuge by the roadside for fear of getting swept away.

A few courageous ones who were determined to continue the journey waded slowly at bonnet level through the floods, dodging floating obstacles here and there.

New pieces of furniture including wardrobes, settees and desks that had been packed in carpentry shops along the road were swept away, compounding the hazards of driving at the time.

Coupled with the ongoing strike action by commercial drivers in Accra, Tuesday’s torrent would further aggravate the challenge of commuting within the national capital and offer a perfect excuse for some workers to either report late or even stay home.
