Tema, Feb 23, GNA – The Tema Oil Refinery on Friday inaugurated its ladies association with a call on women to participate in union activities to promote their interest at workplaces. Miss Akua Britwum, Research Fellow of the Centre for Development Studies of the University of Cape Coast, said women must fully participate in union activities to articulate their labour concerns. She said it was time male dominance of leadership positions of trade unions was changed because men could not properly fight for the rights of their female counterparts.
Miss Britwum urged professional ladies to identify their roles in their establishments as well as find ways to augment the work of their male counterparts to increase productivity. Mrs Victoria Nkansah, President of the TOR Ladies Association (TORLA), said the association, which has 80 members, was formed last year to see to the welfare of the ladies working at the refinery. Mrs Nkansah said with the formation of TORLA, the female workforce would be in a better position to address problems facing them at the workplace and that members would also help management to solve issues affecting the female workers.
Stating the aims of the association, she said it was its objective to help the disadvantaged in society and would help some orphanages. Mrs Sophia Essah, Solicitor Secretary of TOR, swore in an eight-member executive. 23 Feb 08
